The History of CLC Landscape Design

Coined in 1973, the title "CLC" comes from the names Cording, Laster and Cording - those being my father, one of his best friends from high school - Art Laster, and my mother. Today, CLC is run by my father, myself and the wonderful employees that have made CLC their home for many years.

From the beginning, CLC was founded on the idea that "great landscapes begin with great design ideas." My father was one of the first landscape architects to create a design/build firm, which allows great landscape design ideas to be generated in the design phase, as well as, during the installation phase. CLC was one of the first companies founded on the "design/build" principle and we have been a pioneer and leader of design/build landscaping for over 35 years.

We are extremely proud of the long-term relationships we have developed over the years, both with our clients, and with our own employees. Almost every one of CLC's employees have been here for over 10 years, and some as long as 25 years. Such long-term relationships have led to a feeling of family around the company, and that positive energy translates into superb landscaping projects. Many of our clients have noted this in the testimonials they have written us.

In case you are wondering, Art Laster (the "L" of "CLC") has followed his passion for plants and created Plant Detectives, a retail & wholesale nursery located in Chester, NJ that always has beautiful landscape plants. He personally selects the excellent plants we install and keeps us updated on the newest and best plant varieties. My mother has also gone on to follow her passion - that being of children and teaching - where she still enjoys today teaching eighth-grade mathematics (God bless her soul).

The CLC Family

Richard Cording Richard Cording, RLA, ALSA has been the captain of our ship for over 35 years. He oversees each landscape design, meets with clients, trains employees, and coordinates the master schedule. Lately, he is very interested in green/sustainable design ideas and is researching ways that our landscape designs can become even more "green." Aside from his love of landscape architecture, he enjoys keeping his many bird feeders filled, taking walks in the woods, playing basketball, and spending time with his wife and four children.

Richard Cording Jr. Rich Cording, Jr., MLD, an eagle-scout, studied philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross and Oxford University, and thereafter, served as an officer on the USS JOHN S. MCCAIN (DDG 56) stationed in Tokyo, Japan. After those adventures, he earned a Masters of Landscape Design from Columbia University in New York City. For the past several years he has been a landscape designer working alongside his father. His particular passion is planting design and the idea of selecting the best plant for a location. Additionally, he photographs our landscape projects and built this website. Aside from work, he loves to play frisbee, take trips, and spend time with his girlfriend and his family.
